Yes they ate quail and they ate manna whitch is the hebrew word meaning,"What is it?"
Read PSALMS chap 78 v.23-29 verse 25 calls it "angels food"
The hebrew children did not know what it was so all we can do is look to gods word for the answer. "angels food"

I was going to say quail; I forgot about manna-isn't that a type of bread-what a sh*tty diet! I don't know very much about nutrition but I would think they would have had to rely on a god to keep them alive forty years surviving on bread alone! Well, with the exception of a few days where they had quail...

remember that they took almost everything they owned and the Ethiopians treasures so they lasted on that for a while but then they actually ran out and so god had bread fall out of the sky, the Hebrews were suppose to only take the portion of bread that they were going to eat that day but most of them got more to spare for the next day. god didn't permit that so he rotted all the leftovers. that's one way i remember they ate in the desert.

If you are talking about the exodus from Egypt it was manna one time and quail another. Oh, and water came from rocks struck by Moses. He got in ttrouble for that once.
