I suffer from constant feelings of worthlessness and depression. I feel extremely unattractive and unworthy of love. I frequently suspect my peers of talking negatively about me behind my back and suggesting it in my presence (like an inside joke). Sometimes I desire death so that I won't feel this pain any longer. I have never sought professional help and I'm fearful to do so. I don't want to involve myself with an uncaring professional whose only solution is to get me addicted to medications. Should I be seeking help at this point? What should I do?

You could always try a series of letters to 'Dear Abby'...

Seroiously, depression is a medical condition (I'm told) and you do need to see an expert in it. Start with your regular doctor, have them recommend you to someone who can help.

Yes go to a professional, I went to a regular medical doctor and he prescribed me an anti depressant, I stopped taking it because I did not really need it, but it will not hurt to go see, I had never thought of taking my life or hurting others, I was just unhappy about a certain situation at that time, I do not think all doctors just want to get you addicted to meds but chronic depression can cause you to have to keep taking the meds..but at least you are happy then.

You should absolutely get help. When you call for an appointment or at your first visit tell them you do not want meds. They can help you with meditation, visualization, behavior modification etc. Sometimes all you need is someone to talk to that is not judging you and you don't ever have to see again. If you aren't comfy going to a therapist, tell your doc or anyone. Just start talking. Ive been there. It does end. Good luck.

Seek help.
Reach out to a family member, (your mother, your father, a brother, a sister, a cousin, an aunt, an uncle) and tell them what you have just written here.
Let them help and support you.

Check the yellow pages under "mental health," "health," "social services," "suicide prevention," "crisis intervention services," "hotlines," "hospitals," or "physicians" for phone numbers and addresses, or have your family doctor refer you to a trusted specialist

Get help NOW.
This is a temporary and treatable state.
I know it feels like it, but you are not alone. Many people have felt as you do, and have beaten their depression.

If you are contemplating suicide, please call 1-800-784-2433.

I would look into getting councling because there is probably a cause for you to be having all these unwanted and unnatural feelings toward yourself, there is nothing you can lose if you do go to councling. maybe some antidepressants will work. make sure your insurance will cover it. ;)
