Ok, I am 29, married and have an 8 year old son. My question is this: Every spring and summer, I spend a lot of time at local ponds and even water filled ditches "turtle hunting". Though my version of hunting is "rescuing" the baby turtles and bringing them home until they are around 3 inches, and then I release them. That way they have less predators and plus love them soooo much. My son and husband do not share in my "hobby" and I really thought I would outgrow it by now. I mean, how many 29 year old women do you know that do this? I am always afraid that someone will see me driving by and then I will have to tell them what I am doing waist deep in dirty pond water. What do you think? P.S....I EVEN HAVE MY OWN "TURTLE RESCUE" WEBSITE TO HELP EDUCATE OTHERS.

Your story sounds sooo familiar. I just had to give up my turtle because my husband can't stand having one (and I can't keep her as a class pet anymore). It's a better hobby than smoking weed or spending money on manicures every week, right? I wouldn't worry about it if I were you. I think your website is awesome. People don't realize they're not good pets and end up dumping them in ponds. Educating the public is pretty cool of you. Oh, and you asked if it was weird. Well, it's been my experience that turtle people are weird. They would always go psycho on me and were uber touchy when I asked questions on a turtle forum. But you seem okay. :)

Weird? I want to give you a hug just reading what you say about it!

And far from thinking you should "grow out of it," I'm thinking of ways you could grow it even bigger. You've already GOT a Web site -- do you have any kind of bulletin board or Yahoo! group where people can share questions, give answers, and offer suggestions?

I'm suddenly spinning off all KINDS of idea. I'm going to PM you (if you accept them) through Yahoo! Answers and bounce some of these ideas off of you. (I'm an experienced organizer of grassroots community events and, well, this one really lights me up for some reason.)

I'll leave you with this quotation, which should inspire you:

"Never underestimate the power of a few committed individuals to change the world. It's the only thing that ever has."

I am 29 and though I do not share in your hobby I think it is very sweet and nothing to be embarrassed about. If your husband and son wont join in then it can just be your own thing(as mom's we sometimes need our own things). I say keep up the good works

Oh, I might have read your site to figure out how to take care of the little box turtle I ended up adopting. Doing the same thing you are with it.

They are cute and adorable. I don't think its strange. I've had injured rabbits, possums, squirrels and now a turtle around.

Good job, keep having fun.

I think it's great. You're doing your own little part to help out. As long as it's not all you can ever talk about or do, I say carry on.
