My cat got stuck between the door and a screen door sometime this morning while were out, and we just got back home. We left at 9 and just came back around 4 pm. When we let her out she was panting really hard, and wouldn't drink any water, although I'm guessing it's becuse she couldn't, not because she didn't want to. She immediately ran to the tile floor downstairs and flopped there panting really hard for maybe 15 minutes. She sounded like a dog! Her front legs and chest were all soggy, and I thought it was sweat, until checking online I found that cats don't have sweat glands. We sprayed some water on her, and rubbed her with damp towels. She seems to be doing fine now, but I read some really scary things about nerve damage and heat stroke while checking online for anything helpful. Anyone have any experience with this and can offer some good advice?

Btw, it's currently around 93 degrees F right now, and There isn't much (if any) shade on the balcony in the afternoon.

Sounds like you got her cooled down as fast as you could which is the right thing to do. She could also have had a panic attack + being overheated. so keep her in a cool place with plenty of cool water. You can spray water on her underside if she will allow it. The skin is thinner there, so there is more blood near the surface to cool. Keep her under observation for a few days and if she returns to normal, no worries, but if she acts differently take her to your Vet.

In the wild, all members of the cat family cool off by Licking eack other in the faces and around the neck area. The saliva acts as a coolant, keeping the heat at bay.
What you have done so far is all you can do.keep wiping the cat with a damp cloth, and it will be fine.

You dont have to worry about Nerve and circulatory damage.Cats have been designed to squeeze through the smallest areas and enclosures, ensuring minimal physical damage to both organs and systems in the most stressing conditions. Its no wonder they have 9 whole lives!

Besides being over heated, Im she was uncomfortable, thirsty, hungry, the whole nine yards! Getting her cooled down was the main thing, keep her comfy near a fan, or some place she feels comfortable.

I advise you to call the VETS, just to ask questions, explain the situation, then they will ask you questions, and give you things to look for.. She should be ok....

P.S. water submersion is not a good idea unless the VETS says so, you dont want to get her upset even more!

Good luck!

Get a bowl of water (cool, not icy) and dip her feet into the bowl (cats sweat through their paws - this helps to cool them quickly). Let her drink a little at a time. Get her to the vet if she does not perk up within about 10 - 15 minutes. Good luck.

I suggest that you take her to the vet immediately. Even thought she might be fine, you need to get her checked out jsut to be safe. Heas stroke can kill an animal really fast. Don't ignore this. She needs to be seen by a vet just to be safe.

well u should probably put your cat in a cool place with water she was probably just hot at the time and if she seems to be doing fine now i would just put her in a cool place and give her water. if u have any other concerns u should maybe call the vet.

Call or go to a vet. Pronto. For now, try putting him her in some cool water.

You need to take her to a vet asap, or at least call one. That is too serious for peoples mediocre advice in this community.

if you're reallly worried, take her to the vet. they might be able to give her a shot to help with the dehydration. keep her inside and cool. don't let her move around too much.
