My Autistic son gets this problem a lot.
If you're getting puss from the ingrown toenail, you will need to go to the dr. for an antibiotic. Once the antibiotic kicks in, it will help the pain usually associated with an ingrown nail.

Here is what my son's dr. told us to do.

1) use peroxide on the area if it's infected. This will help.
2) warm foot soaks with epson salt in the water. The epson salt helps to draw out the infection.
3) while the skin is still soft from the water, take a wash cloth and very gently move the skin to the side a little to make room for the nail. Don't do this all at once, do it a little at a time after each foot soak. The goal is to make a little more room for the nail by stretching the skin back just a tad that's gotten in the way, where the nail's embedded.

I f the toe nail is really painful, see your doctor, it may get infected, you will probably have to have it removed, always cut your nails straight across and not at the corners, that is why they grown in.
