Avoid curling irons and hot rollers, use conditioner on the ends of your hair, use combs more often than brushes, get your hair trimmed frequently, don't color or use other chemical processes, and eat a healthy diet(take a multi-vitamin too) because your hair needs all the nutrients to grow strong and durable.

Regular trimming is the best way to avoid split ends. You don't say if you color it, so I don't know why you are having breakage problems. One of the best things you can do for your hair is take a good multi-vitamin and add a bit more of vitamins C and E. Unfortunately, it takes longer than you might want it to take for it to work, but work it does. Most of the Aussie products and Toni & Guy products (TIGI) are good temporary fixes for hair problems, read all the labels and decide which ones are for you.
Good luck with the hair. Keep in mind that how you treat your body (including your hair) has a great deal to do with life NOW and in the FUTURE. Hugs...

for hair that is prone to breakage and split ends, the absolute best thing that you can do for your hair is to keep it well trimmed. About 1/4 inch trim for every 1/2 inch of growth. This means getting a trim about every 6-8 weeks. about once a month (more often if your hair is very damaged) have your stylist put on a deep conditioning treatment, this will help your hair become stronger, and no break so easily.

Products can't prevent or repair split ends, no matter what any commercial or hairstylist says.
You can cut down on splits by:
Using gentle hair products. Try to avoid products that contain sulphates, cones and mineral oil.
Treating your hair gently. Don't pile it on top of your head when you wash. That causes tangles that require a lot of combing to remove.
Comb your hair in the shower when it is loaded with conditioner with a wide tooth seamless comb.
Don't rub your hair with a towel. Blot to remove water. Use a leave-in to provide slip and comb gently with a wide tooth seamless comb. Never, never, never use a brush on wet or damp hair! It will stretch, split and break your hair. Never let your stylist use a brush on your wet hair, either! They should know better.
Avoid heat. Blowdryers, flatirons, curling irons and hot rolers are damaging to the hair. Flatirons boil the moisture in your hair, causing permanant bubbling and breakage. No product on the earth can protect your hair from the heat and being burned. (Think of it this way, would you clamp one of those things to your arm? What do you think they do to your hair?)
When you brush your hair, use a boar bristle brush. Brush gently. If you encounter a tangle, don't rip through it with the brush. Deal with it with your comb, gently, then continue brushing.
Get a trim to remove the split ends you have, then do regular Search and Destroy missions. Lookat your hair in bright light. Check the ends, if you see a split end, trim it jst above the split with very sharp scissors that you use only for your hair.
If your hair is long, consider wearing it up on windy days. Avoid friction and catching your hair on objects. Braid it for sleep and try a satin or very high thread count cotton pillowcase.

I like Pantene Pro-V brands or Dove. I also use a lot of conditioner, even leave-in conditioner after a shower. I think, though, the most important prevention is to not use hot irons on your hair too often, and if you do, make sure to use a special hair protection products from heat prior to straightening or curling. Good luck! :D

Redken Extreme shampoo and conditioner is by far the best stuff i have ever used on my hair. I have dry hair from getting it highlighted and my hair has never looked better. It is expensive (about 12 dollars for each) but it is worth it.

first off the one thing i have learned recently is that you actually have to SPEND SOME MONEY on your shampoos... I've used things that i could buy at drug stores and then I went to Ulta and spent some the money on Bed Head and I love the way my hair is now... Go to a salon and ask them to help you out because chances are they have seen someone with the same problem as you :] Just remember that you may have to actually spend some dough...

really the best thing to do is to get your hair trimmed every 6-8 weeks. there are products that temporarily seal split ends, but nothing for permanent fixes. another thing you can try is it not dry/straighten/curl it often.
