Where?? It varies wildly depending on what area you're building in and what level of quality you want. In some areas, you can very easily get over $300 per sq. ft.

Construction cost is very high in California. Lumber is very expensive. I would talk to a builder in the area you want. For example Santa Barbara has a lot of regulations and it raises the cost of construction. I think the rate of consturction is in the upwards of $500 a square foot.

Depends on where in CA., land is expensive in most places. I just a bought (1000 sq ft) a home at a little above $500,000.00.

I used to be in construction and there are WAY to many factors that go into it. For example, prices vary depending on where. Also vary on one story or two and the materials that are used.

I'm a mortgage exec, depends on your county, how you want the house, permits etc... could be very very costly... I'm thinking in the cheapest part... no less than 200k
