$ THE MISSING DOLLAR RIDDLE $
Three friends check into a motel for the night and the clerk tells them the bill is $30, payable in advance. So, they each pay the clerk $10 and go to their room. A few minutes later, the clerk realizes he has made an error and overcharged the trio by $5. He asks the bellhop to return $5 to the 3 friends who had just checked in. The bellhop sees this as an opportunity to make $2 as he reasons that the three friends would have a tough time dividing $5 evenly among them; so he decides to tell them that the clerk made a mistake of only $3, giving a dollar back to each of the friends. He pockets the leftover $2 and goes home for the day! Now, each of the three friends gets a dollar back, thus they each paid $9 for the room which is a total of $27 for the night. We know the bellhop pocketed $2 and adding that to the $27, you get $29, not $30 which was originally spent. Where did the other dollar go????

10 points to the 1st 1 to find the missing $..

Boy is that clerk an idiot.
He tells them it is 30 dollars
They (3) pay 10 each which = 30
then he says they overpaid by 5 dollars
Either he can't add. or he told them the wrong amount.
Next, you are taking the two dollars from the wrong amount.
You are adding the two dollars to the 27 which they paid. Wrong.
You must add the two dollars to the 25 which they did pay the clerk to the room. 30 - 5
That would make 25 + 2 = 27. then add the 3 he gave back.
Nice try though.

The clerk gave $5 back, but really, the boys got 3 dollars back.

"They each paid $9 for the room which is a total of $27 for the night."
CORRECT

"The bellhop pocketed $2 and adding that to the $27, you get $29 , not $30..... "
WRONG

REMEMBER, the bellhop POCKETED $2 of the $27.

So the next sentence should have been...
"The boys got their $1 each back. The bellhop took $2 of the $27."

Now, there is NO MISSING DOLLAR. Just a confusing way of retracking the money.

The facts in this riddle are clear: There is an initial $30 charge. It should have been $25, so $5 must be returned and accounted for. $3 is given to the 3 friends, $2 is kept by the bellhop - there you have the $5. The trick to this riddle is that the addition and subtraction are done at the wrong times to misdirect your thinking - and quite successfully for most. Each of the 3 friends did indeed pay $9, not $10, and as far as the friends are concerned, they paid $27 for the night. But we know that the clerk will tell us that they were charged only $25 and when you add the $3 returned with the $2 kept by the bellhop, you come up with $30.

They paid a total of $30. They each received $1 back, so in essence, they each paid $9 for the hotel. That totals $27 payment. The room was only $25. The difference ($2) is what the bellhop pocketed.

Your math mistake is that you assumed to add the $2 dollars to the $27, but you should have subtracted the $2 (tip for bellhop) from the $27 to get the rate of the hotel room ($25).

Fnd1+Fnd2+Fnd3+Bellhop=Clerk(Hotel)

10 + 10 + 10 + 0 = 30

(1) + (1) + (1) + (2) = (5)

9 + 9 + 9 + (2) = 25

I see no problem with this. The bellhop just made two bucks.

we know the bellhop pocketed$2 and adding that to the 27 you do get $29. You add $3 to the 27 and get 30

They didn't each pay $9 to the hotel, because the room was only $25. $25/3 = $8.33 per man. So they paid a total of $25 to the hotel, kept $1 each (that's $28), and the unauthorized $2 tip that the bellboy paid himself makes $30.
