Lots and lots. Most of them are monitored and they all have a specific focus.

Genforum.com, for instance, is about genealogy. They have boards for 8,000 surnames, almost every county in the USA and most foreign countries. (Provinces and states for Canada and Australia, shires for UK.) YA! has one category, genealogy, and half the posts on it are inane or off topic; often both.

There are boards for politics, religion, science, community development, etc. etc.

As a start, you could look through the poss on a Yahoo! group or Google group for the subject you are interested in.

Actually, they do better here than the idiots who post messges on Yahoo news items; count your blessings.

This is the first time I've used this iste and its quite fun browsing through all the Qs and As.

There's a lot of rubbish, but some good answers too, people are generally helpful. And it depends on the question.

Try looking at a specific site on whatever it is you're trying to find out, go on a forum or something. There's a wealth of knowledge if you know where to ask!

I try to give serious answers to keep the purpose of the forum. If I don't know an answer, I generally skip it. I also skip stuff like "do you like my avatar? that just don't matter one way or another. There are a lot of teens on here, so of course there will be childish answers, but they are also the ones most in need of answers. Maybe if you stick with philosophy category and similar ones you can avoid a lot of the juk that goes on here.

There are a lot of infantile answers but there are also some who truly try to help. You just kind of blow off the BS. Don't give up. I take it serious if the question is serious. If someone is kidding around that can be fun, too. What's your question?
