What's your justification for change? If you have a reason it makes it easier. For example:

"Hi Mr. Smith. When you have a moment, I would like to talk with your privately about something."

When the time comes...

"Mr. Smith I would like to request a change in shifts."

Then give your justification...kids in school, spouse works same shift, etc.

Your abiliyt to change may be based on seniority.

Boss, I would like to work different hours than I have been working. Are there vacancies on another shift?

"Is there any possible way I could start working a different shift?"
seems pretty simple to me, the worst they can tell you is no and then you're no worse off than you were before you asked

Sir or Ma'am, I believe I will be a better benefit to our organization if I am able to move to a different shift.
Be positive and polite.
