There's no best before date on the ones I have and I think they've been there for about a week but I can't be sure. I had one today and it wasn't so bad but I wonder if I should risk another for tomorrow's sandwich

In the spirit of your question, I would say that putting tomatoes in the fridge is the worst thing you can do. Yes they stay fresher for longer, but the cold temperature interferes with your ability to taste the tomatoey taste. If you leave them out and eat them at room temperature they taste so much better and because room temp will let you see and feel the softness associated with overripe or decaying tomatoes you dont need to worry about sell by dates.

you should look to see if its from near or far ,,home town tomatoes are ripe now ,and not pale and hard ,,the shipped ones from out of state havent had time to ripen ,,so set them upside down aday or so till the red is normal, and if the tomatoes are in a paper sack or just rinsed and on the shelf they should last till you have to cut the bad spots off.,. then toss,,, but keeping any fruit or veggie in a plastic container or bag makes them rot right away ,,an olde army cook

Tomatoes can't hurt you if they are old. If they get too soft they taste bad so check for softness and try a slice before you put it on the sandwich.

So long as they are fairly firm and the skin is not bursting and they are not turning blue(!) then they should be ok. They keep for a couple of weeks anyway. Fresher, ripe toms will keep for less.
Enjoy!
