They are called cold sores or technically herpes simplex virus (HSV). They are not fun and I understand your pain as they do hurt and hurt bad. Once you have HSV you will always get cold sores. They are brought on by stress among other things. The cold sore is not contagious.

Any method to get rid of them is going to hurt quite bad. The thing that I have found that works the best is baking soda. Swish your mouth every few hours with a solution (the more the better). If you can take it, direct contact with a backing soda paste works best. To help with the pain, eat plain yogurt WITH active cultures (that is the key part). Brush your teeth with a baking soda solution, not toothpastee as the toothpast can cause irritation, and be gentle with the tooth brush. DO NOT eat any food that is sharp, rough textured, or spicy as this will irritate.
