A bruise is a spot where you have broken a blood vessel under your skin. The color depends on how much blood gets out of the blood vessel before your blood clots and repairs the vessel.

When you cut yourself the blood flows, and then clots. This always happens with almost every injury because you have so many tiny blood vessels in your body. Every single cell needs its nourishment, so there are many of these tiny blood vessels (called capillaries) in your body.
When you bang yourself, but don't cut the skin but, you still damage these tiny blood vessels. They are just under the skin and bleed. What you see in a bruise is that blood under the skin.
When blood is exposed to the air (say in a cut or in your lungs) it takes on oxygen and turns red. After the oxygen is used then the blood turns blue. That's the reason why when you look at a blood vessel diagram the arteries are colored red and the veins are colored blue. The arteries carry oxygen to your blood cells, and the veins carry off waste. They are depleted of oxygen, turning blue and are headed back to the heart and lungs to get more.
When you bleed under your skin you damage both arteries and veins. There isn't any free oxygen under your skin so the blood appears blue. If you get cut the skin the blood bleeds out then it regains oxygen so it is red, even if it comes from the veins.
A bruise is black and blue because the blood doesn't have any oxygen in it. The black areas probably have more blood and are tenderer than the blue areas. If you were to cut open the skin over a bruise then you could drain off the blood and remove a lot of that black and blue. But, you would be injuring yourself even more, and risking the chance of infection.
When a person suffers brain damage in an accident, the most common and dangerous form of injury is bruising. As the blood pools under the skull it swells and puts pressure on the brain, which can make the injury worse. Sometimes the surgeons will go in and try to drain the bruise to reduce the pressure.
Your bruise is just blood under the skin. Since that area is damaged it is tender, and the bruise outlines the exact area where that damage is. Blood helps the healing by sending in nutrients, oxygen and withdrawing the wastes. The same thing happens in the case of a bruise, but part of that waste is the extra blood first released with the damage. It is blue because the surrounding cells take up the oxygen.
It is dangerous to puncture the skin and drain off the extra blood and is only done when the pressure can cause more injury. The best thing to do for a bruise is to let the bodies natural healing take effect. You can probably use concealer or makeup to cover the bruise.

A bruise is a bunch of burst blood vessels under the skin. They look horrible because it's basically blood that sits just under your skin.

When you crash into something hard, so that the insides are bleeding, but there's no wound for the blood to flow out of you. As for the colour... yeah, sometimes it looks pretty bad.

Internal bleeding, usually harmless. However if you get a lot of bruising but can't recall having bumped yourself, go see your doctor.
