oh you poor thing. Stay calm first of all there is hope. You need to go to the store and buy a Clairol hair color removal kit. If you have long hair then you will need 2 boxes. This stuff is very strong so make sure you have someone apply it in a wide open space or outdoors. After allowing it to sit the max amount of time you will notice that your hair will began to turn a yellowish orange color. Oh by the way, buy hair color to apply afterwords. This finished result will not be a very pretty color. You will need something ash or dark blonde because you have to be able to counteract the effects of the orange. After everything is done, leave your hair alone. It will be in a fragile state. I suggest some hot oil treatments and no hairsprays or gels. Your hair will mend though and you will be fine. Good luck sweetie.
ps. I am a beautician and the clairol hair remover kit is the same chemicals we use in the salon. You just pay more for it with a proffessional, but I didn't just tell you that...lol Note: Red is the hardest color to remove from your hair unless you counteract it's effects with dark, nothing warm.

I once dyed my hair jet black, then decided I was sick of it and wanted to change it.

I went to a salon, and the stylist stripped the color out of my hair. The whole process took literally all day - almost 12 hours. When it was done, my hair was pretty dry and rough. Worse, it was all different colors, ranging from dark brown to orange to golden blonde.

I would NOT recommend trying to strip the color out. Instead, go to the salon (do not try it at home!) and see if the stylist will give you highlights. You can lighten up the overall impression of the hair without taking all the color out.

Then be patient, and grow it out.

Most hair "stripping" products don't do much of anything. Your best bet is probably to go to a salon for a neutralizing treatment or chosing a new color and trying it on all of your hair. I would try a different color base. If the base you used last was an ashe or a brass, I would try a natural. Good Luck. Hope it works out for you.

You need to strip it, which doesn't just strip the dye, but also your natural color. Once it's striped, you want to make sure to use a moisturizing pack several times a week. You can redye the striped hair back to your color by picking a dye that matches the color you want.

The darker the dye, the harder it is to remove. Black is the hardest color to get rid of, and striping it is about your only option.

Ok, so I TOTALLY agree with Amy, she gave a great answer, BUT, you might want to try something first...... if you just want to lighten a little, and can stand having darker than normal hair.... try washing several times with dish soap.... like dawn or something..... it has a high PH. meaning it will strip some of the color, and help it fade..... then DEEP CONDITION really well..... so it doesn't feel so dry.
This will not strip the color, but it will gradually fade the color, after washing a few times with dawn, you can start using Suave or something in the shower for like a week or 2.
It will help lighten, but it will not take you all the way back to a med brown....
Just thought you might want to try something else before you strip the heck out of your hair.
If not refer to Amy's answer :)

I dyed my hair black and I hated it so much that I bought something to strip my hair. It made my hair so dry feeling and it took me like 2 months to repair the damage. It also did not strip the color it actually made parts of my hair bleach blonde and made other parts reddish colored. I would suggest just waiting until it grows out before you make it any worse.

You can get color correcting kits from sally beauty supply. They have them both for semi-permanent and permanent. However, the kits for permanent hair are basicly just bleach or something like that so you are going to end up having to dye your hair again. You can always go to your salon and they can do a color correction.

A visit to the salon for color correction should do the trick. Coloring your hair at home is damaging enough -- don't make it worse by trying to fix it yourself!
