I have been having a debate with my sister in law. In short she has been trying to say that "Nobody has spanked there kids since the 60's" I know my mom sure did when I was a kid. For the most part she thinks my mom was the only one. Im just tryin to prove a point to her, so I ask- DID ANYONE ELSES PARENT's SPANK THEM growing up ?

I was born in 69, and you betcha I got spanked!! I deserved everyone of them too. I have 2 daughters, 13 and 10 and they both still get spanked when the need arises. It is a rare occurance now that they are older, but they both know I won't hesitate to do it if they need it.

I'm still a kid myself (I'm 15). I don't get spanked anymore and haven't since I was about 5 years old. But when I was spanked, it was just a firm open handed swat on the butt. I know a lot of parents still do that even today. I think what your sister in law might mean is that the severity of "spanking" has decreased since the 60s. Because back in the day, it wasn't uncommon to literally wallop your kid or use something like a belt or a switch (according to my parents and grandparents). Parents don't generally take it that far anymore because it's kind of abusive and we've discovered better ways to discipline children.

My parents spanked my brother and me. Sometimes my mom would use a switch and I have seen my dad use a belt on my brother (not the buckle end). My brother and I both turned out well. We are not perfect, but who is. My brother and I both have families and have always worked since we were 14 or 15. When my 17 year old was younger I spanked her occassionally if the "crime" called for it. She is turning out to be a pretty good kid too. I know a lot of people who spank their children.

When I say spank, I don't mean that we leave marks or bruises. And.... it really did hurt me more than it hurt my kid. As long as the spanking doesn't become abuse, I don't see a problem with it.

I was born in 1974 and have never been spanked a day in my life. Neither have my kids, or my nieces and nephews. We were brought up by love and respect. NOT FEAR! There were consequences to our actions but it was never physical. NOBODY ever has the right to hit another human being. I have a masters degree in psychology, one sister is a RN, my other sister is a physical therapist in a nursing home. My daughters are both straight A students in the accelerated program in high school. My 22 year old nephew owns his own business and bought his first house by the age of 20.
So no one can argue that by not spanking kids that they will grow up without morals, rules, or discipline.
Spanking is the easy, lazy way to raise your kids. It's quick and easy to just hit them and scare them into what you want. But it takes time, patience and respect to sit down and talk to them. To explain what they did wrong, and why it was wrong.
I think it says alot about what kind of person you are if you can spank your kids. And people wonder what is wrong with our kids today, go figure. Just look at the parents.

I was spanked twice. (of course I am a child of the 60's) but guess what! My son is 25 and when he was little he got spanked a couple of times.

People have blurred the line between getting spanked and being abused. A spanking is one or two smacks on the bottom to get your attention for misbehaving. (only for very serious misbehavior, not things like forgetting to take out the trash, or spilling the milk) Abuse is being repeatedly hit for any small infraction.

My parent's spanked me! Now I work for a social service agency and we tell parents there is a difference between spanking and hitting your kid. There should never be more than three spanks: one for the crime, one for the child and once for the parent. Anything after that is abuse. This should be done with the hand, not an object.

I was spanked as a child and deserved it every time. The worst was when my mom would say "wait until your father gets home".

Take a look at the kids today, how rude and disrespectful they are. I think kids need to know their boundaries and if they step out of those boundaries then there should be real consequences for those actions.

I have been given my bare butt spanked for each and each factor starting to be up. i don't be apologetic approximately it and it wasn't abusive. It worked nicely. once I rather have childrens, i will actual spank. I in all threat won't spank their bare butts as a results of fact it is not laptop anymore and that i will in all threat use different punishments and save a spanking for super offenses or repeat offenses.

I was raised in the 60's and was spanked.I know that doesn't answer your question, but I can tell you I spanked my kids while they were growing up and still will if they need it.Some people think it is wrong but I would have to disagree. My kids know what respect is and they mind me til this day. They are 16,18 & 20.Don't get me wrong-I didn't beat them everyday but they were spanked and they learned right from wrong and I can honestly say I haven't spanked a child in 10 years. They learned when they were young.
