They used to give it in the old days cos it was similar to giving penicillin, however it was risky because of allergic reactions to those sensitive to the spores and the chemical properties of the mold. Cut the mouldy bits off and chuck the rest for the birds.

just because penicillin was found on cheese, doesnt mean that you can eat any old yeast! Toasting it will kill it and it is unlikely to be harmful, but hey, why challenge your immune system more than is necessary? I would bin it and use fresh and leave your lymphocytes alone to work on the tough stuff!

But I wouldn't eat it on bread. Fresh bread wins, every time.
