The real answer is that the SPCA or North Shore Animal League in your area will have puppies for adoption and you will get counseling on the type of dog that might fit into your lifestyle.
Different breeds of dogs have different needs as far as exercise goes. I wouldn't think you would want a border collie (and they are beautiful) in a NY apartment.

Go to the local animal shelter or humane society. For $300 you can get the dog, have it fixed and vaccinated if it isn't already, get ALL the stuff that the dog needs and have money left over!

Well, I don't live in NYC, but I suggest you to go to those shelters for homeless doggies, the most of them are vaccinated and trained by volunteers, and the best... they all need and want to share love an adoption is free!!
