Most people think that their religion is right, and that others are wrong and that's all there is too it.
They are close minded to other beliefs.
That is the EXACT reason that I'm not a religious person.
I don't want to turn into one of those people that show up at my front door every other day.
If being an asshole is part of religion, I don't want any part of it at all!
I have my own personal belief system, whether it's right or wrong in other eyes/minds, I DON'T CARE.
Try to make me believe the way you do, and I will slap you in the face, calmly talk to me about it and I will listen, although I will make no promises on how much of it I will be able to take to heart.
No there will never be unity among different religious groups. The majority are all too pushy to ever give another a chance.
To the person that posted before me:
If Christianity isn't hostile, then why offer such a hostile comment? "As an unbeliever, you are spiritually dead."
I think belief is a good thing, it can help you get through your toughest times. Most people just take it to an extreme that it was never meant to go to.

Check out how many unbelievers are hostile towards religion. Just hang out here for a while, you'll see.
For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. The problem is the few who initiate such hostility and start the cycle. Retaliation begets retaliation.
It exists both within and without religion.

I agree with serf and scruffy.
Christianity, Islam and Judaism are not hostile towards their 'heretics' .
They just say that you will burn in hell for eternity, if you don't contribute when they pass the plate. Earlier , when they were allowed to do so by the prevalent law, they burned the non-believers up in this world any way.( Who trusts God? Let us get it over with right here, right now!!!).
And if they found out later that a non-believer had mistakenly been buried properly in their traditional way, they would exhume his corpse, burn it up and spread the ashes to prevent him from getting to heaven ( Rather like bolting the stabledoor after the horsehas run away, but rather funny, if you don't feel all that necromania is not your cup of congealed blood).
But hey! They kill you for your own good! While they are torturing you, They pity you, so better convert, or else.... There won't be much of you left to shower the condescending pity on!

You are asking the question of the ages. I think it is not religion it is how believers interpret their religion. As a Christian I follow Christ and Christ did not raise a hand against those who attacked him.
Few things are true, but this is-- the hardest thing to change about a person is their belief system and when people start hating it's difficult to replace prejudice with love.
And a religion of unity would be a false, forced religion. It would be worse than what we have today!!!
One last thought, If people would pray to GOD and listen to what He speaks to them in their hearts, that would solve much of the world dilema.

Because any challenge to the religion's power or risk of it loosing its followers is a threat to its existance, loss of power, influence, wealth etc. Even by refusing to accept the religion. Catholics burnt Protestants to death (and vice-versa) only 500 years ago. Islam is still at it.
There will never be a single world religion because God does not exist and this is being recognised by most inteligent people (except those in the Middle East and Asia who are still dominated by religious codes of practice and the retribution threatened by the clerics.) At the present, the power and wealth of the different religions are far more important to them than any beliefs or moral codes.

Well, technically not "all" religion is hostile towards its unbelievers, but I can see why it would seem that way.
Those religions that don't go around telling someone that "they're damned for eternity if they don't believe in exactly what this religion teaches" tend to get overlooked, because the believers tend to be busier paying attention to their own spiritual practice than they are to everyone else's...

All religions are not hostile to unbelievers. Actually it's them that we should have the most love and understanding for.
Mark 2:16-17
Contemporary English Version (CEV)
16 Some of the teachers of the Law of Moses were Pharisees, and they saw that Jesus was eating with sinners and tax collectors. So they asked his disciples, "Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?"
17 Jesus heard them and answered, "Healthy people don't need a doctor, but sick people do. I didn't come to invite good people to be my followers. I came to invite sinners."

Not hostile just trying to save your soul from eternal torment.
Also fellowship which is spreading the word is a tenant or rule that Christians must abide by. In other words we are supposed to quote help the non-believers but that love is seen as hate and intolerance by the NB.

to anyone that says most religions are not hostile to unbelievers how wrong you are with the exception of Buddhism
if you don't believe you apparently go to hell, that in my mind is hostile!! (Christianity)
i am an unbeliever and I never will believe, IF God did exist, then he is one mean being, sending people to supposed hell, and to allow innocent people to die/be killed by others/natural disasters etc etc
religion should be made illegal in all countries in my view with one common goal
DECENCY TO ALL, our values should be to create a safer, cleaner more prosperous world for our decendants to live in, to ensure the survival of the human race.
As long as we have religion world peace will never become a reality
I have resigned myself to the fact that during my life there will not be an end to wars in the world. and that's another 75 years (assuming i live to 100)
horrible world we live in, but I will do my best to look after my friends and family first, if I have anything to offer after that, I will look after your friends and family and so on, but i look after my own first and foremost

Only the judeo christian religions are hostile towards non-believers.
You should study buddhism and broaden your horizons.
The reason why the judeo-christian religions are separating the world is because they're very aggressive in converting new people, and they ALL believe that their way is the only way. Inevitably, when you have enough people thinking this way, they will clash.
