"What is best for writing on the back of pictures?"

superbooks.org ANSWERS:

Nothing is best for writing on the backs of pictures.

Ball point pens leave marks on the front of the photos, so if you insist on using that =only writing on the very bottom of the photo where the impression won't ruin the face of the picture.

Pencils--same thing -Do not apply pressure, and if you don't apply enough pressure, you won't see the writing.

Markers - sometimes these are good but if you put them near other pictures too soon, the marker smears and you ruin all the pictures.

Stickers ? well, if you don't mind stickers on the backs of your pictures, then go for it. BUT, write on the sticker before you apply the sticker to the pictures.

What do professional photojournalists do ?

They need to put captions on their photographs before they hand them in to the newspapers.

The take a long stip of paper and attach it neatly to the bottom of the folder (so the paper is hanging down at the bottom of the picture not pressed up against the back of the picture) . They write on that strip and the strip and the writing makes no impressions on the pictures. Most type the captions on that but some do print them.

Civilians and kids and all other people:

Others - Some just place the pictures in the scrapbooks and write captions under the pictures.

Some use black markers to tag photos on the front of the photo , but that's just another funky method of labeling photographs.

About the only thing that doesn't work well for labeling photos or stickers on photos is fountain pen ink --too leaky and messy and crayons- too much pressure and too much wax.

So choose what you want to label your photos -depending on your use of the photos.

Have a peaceful day.

If I were you I would not write on the back of the picture itself, but on some kind of little sticky labels with a fine point Sharpie or something.

Regular ball point pens do smear, and what's worse they can actually press through so that you see their imprint in the front of the picture. Trust me. I work at a copy place and I see a lot of photos people have ruined by writing on them will ball point pens.

A regular ball point pen. They are the only thing that wont smear.

I would use a pen with a gel roller--you have to let it dry, but you won't have to press so hard on your pics, so there won't be a raised area on the picture where you wrote.
