that look was in when i was 13 too...beware of using too much product though.. you're going for "scrunched", NOT "crunched".
it might take a little experimenting to perfect the look with the amount of time you have to do it. here is what has worked for me no matter how long or short my hair has been:
buy a curling mousse. it doesn't have to be expensive, something $5 or less. use a towel to remove excess water from your hair. before you put the mousse on, scrunch your hair so it starts to take the effect of the style. the amount of product you use depends on how long your hair is. general rule: enough to cover your palm. don't forget, you can always use more if the first amount isn't enough. rub your hands together and apply to your head, and scrunch.
TIP: apply the mousse to the back part of your hair first, and start by the roots. if you put it on the ends first, it's going to turn out crunchy.

i take advantage of a mousse (garnier fructis curl build), then a skinny gel (paul mitchell hair sculpting lotion), then a gel spray (organic essences in a teal bottle), and finally any easy/solid hairspray. Scrunch it after each and every product aside from the hairspray. It maintains to be curly with no need all problematic and gross! (: wish this helped.

What I do to my hair (even though I am not a middle schooler..)
I use mousse then spray gel and use a diffuser to blow dry. While diffusing, I spray with hairspray.

After you shower put lots and lots of gel in your hair, then dry it with a diffuser (that round thing that usually comes with a blow dryer). Works for me!

i love the root lifter called "catwalk" and the hair gel from the "sexy" line (big sexy, curly and sexy...) all of which are available at salons. i also use a diffuser (after putting in the gel and root booster) to dry my hair. this gel that i use doesn't get stiff, but it wont let your hair get frizzy either.
