Meritage (pronounced like heritage http://www.meritagewine.org & http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meritage ), Bordeaux, or any other Red Blends. You get the complexity of Cabernet, the mellowy smoothness of merlot, and a few other varieties (cab franc, petite verdot, malbec) to round it out. I've never had a true Meritage (ie. one bearing the name) that I didn't like.
Try
$10-$15: Menage e trois, Red Truck
$15-$20: Lyeth, Phantom by Bogle (although just a red blend)
$20-$30: Estancia
$30+ Cyrus, Justin Isosceles

Yellowtail shiraz is a good wine.
My favorite is Castello Banfi Brunello di Montalcino Reserva - excellent and reasonably priced for the quality

White - German Riesling (pair with chicken, pork, cheese, etc.)
Red - Italian Lambrusco (pair with beef and especially salmon!)
Icewine - Canadian Red Innisklin... (awesome dessert wine!)
