What you have is called a paranychia. Yes it can be quite painful.
The usual treatment for this is to put a hole through your nail and release the pressure that the blood buildup is causing.
You wont hurt any nerves by having the hole in your nail and it does relieve the pain.
If you can put up with the pain for a while then it can resolve itself but it just depends on how long you want to wait. The blood clot will dissolve but leave a stain under your nail for months.
The hole will help drain the blood, relieve the pain and prevent any lasting problems.

Don't put a hole in your own nail or you'll get an infection. Just let it heal itself. It is perfectly normal for this type of injury to hurt like crazy. It'll be sore for a few weeks, then it should start to feel better. Also, it's gonna look gross until the damaged part of your nail grows out, but it will get better on it's own. However, if you're really concerned and feel like you need to do something, go to a dr to have it done, don't try it yourself.

You have a bruise under your nail, that's all. Put some ice on it or a cold compress, that should help with the swelling and the pain a little. It should get better. Watch it closely for the next two days, and if it looks like the nail is about to come off, see your doctor, otherwise, just relax, it'll heal.

You have a blood blister. How long ago did you do it? If its fresh, heat the end of a paper clip and melt through the mail where its discolored (personally, I use an electric drill). If it bleeds, it'll stop hurting, put on some alcohol and you're all set. If it doesn't bleed, it'll eventually stop hurting in a day or so but you'll probably lose the fingernail. You usually have to make the hole within a few hours of the accident.

My husband smashed his finger yesterday as well, the thumb one and it is purple under nail and throbs badly. He tried to burn a hole in nail as they say to get it to bleed to relieve pressure but no luck there. Nail must be too thick. Trying to find another way to do it. Sterilize whateever you use though. I personally would not do that and just ride it out.
Ice they say is the very first thing to do to get swelling down. Acetaminophen(tylenol) for pain. We are giving it a few days to see if it feels better on it's own. If not he will go in to see a DR. Good Luck and hope this helps. Try typing in "smashed finger" search and see what you come up with, that is what we did.

u can drain the old blood from under the nail by poking a hole with a sterilised pin, however, this may prove to b very painful and possibly cause infection to an inexperienced person, u can use witch hazel to help heal damage tissue, my recommendation is if nail is intact, leave it alone, if u r still not satisfied with that, then go see your physician!eventually old nail may fall off if severely damaged and new nail will grow in leaving finger ready 4 the next smashing!

You don't need to go to the dr. and you don't need to put a hole in your nail either. You just have to ride it out. There is a possibilty the nail might come off depending on how bad it was smashed. I've had this happen to me a couple times. It sucks!

It'll go away. Don't pierce or puncture anything. Put some ice on it. It'll be sore as hell for a couple of days but i'm sure nothings broken. Try being more careful next time.
of course if your boyfriend didn't head off to the city and leave you alone this wouldn't have happened. Heh, heh..lay THAT one on him when he comes back. Or...better yet...tell him that because he wasn't there you had to call your "friend" Victor to find out what to do and he comforted you in your time of need...because YOU weren't here! That'll fix his wagon.
now go get some ice

if you are afraid of drilling a hole in the nail then go to a doctor he will pull the nail off and it will hurt even more.
