I was just thinking about how all of the packages of microwave food says that you have to leave it in the microwave for a couple of minutes after it cooks. Why? I never do, I am too anxious!

I think because it has to cool down. So you won't burn yourself when taking it out. You still have to let the food cool down and it still cooks even when the microwave stops. You wanna let the food cool down, so you won't burn your tongue or your hands. Ouch. I know how you feel, I am so impatient too!!!!!! lol, even once burning myself, lol, some things never change. Have an awesome day!!!

The food will continue to cook/heat even after it is no longer in the microwave. Nothing bad will happen if you don't wait the holding time, it's just that you might get a lower standard of product if you don't follow the manufacturer's instructions.

Because they say that food cooked in a microwave continues to cook for a little while after it's done. I never wait either!

Sometimes you need to wait a bit for 2 basic reasons. You need the heat to permeate the entire dish. It may be really hot in the center and not so on the outside. The other reason it could be is that it is so hot you could burn yourself. Especially those packages with the plastic on top. Even with a couple of holes poked into the top you can still burn yourself. Anyways...hope that helps a little.

It's still cooking, that's why. The molecules are still moving around causing heat and they don't want you insides to get burned.

I definetely know that anxious feeling, lol, but I guess it's to let it cool off. Maybe there's a more technical reason, but I don't know it.
