What is the criteria that we must use in knowing when it is acceptable to throw out the label hypocrite in our conversation with someone whose world view is different from ours.

We see in the New Testement that Jesus used this word often. So if you believe in the Lord and Savior Jesus the Christ, what was Jesus's criteria.

A hypocrite is like this when a person is a homosexual in secret and has a wife and child that he lies to about it.. Then quotes the bible from both sides to make himself look good.. That is a first class hypocrite.. Read and learn..

To be honest, I think very few people are hypocrites. Most people call someone a hypocrite because they have a perception of them as having actions that contradict their own values. But values are very specific. If someone is pro-life and pro-death penalty, that doesn't mean they're a hypocrite and "dont' value life all the time" it just means they value life a variable amount depending on whether it's an unborn fetus or a convicted criminal. People who call people hypocrites usually do so simply because they lack all of the knowledge of the situation; it's an easy answer to say a person "lacks consistency" so you can dismiss whatever intellegent points (if any) they have to offer.

Don't know about how Jesus used it though.

The word hypocrite does not apply to someone simply because their views are different than our own.

A hypocrite is one who professes to own a set of beliefs or has a moral code to live by and then does not.

If your doctor tells you that smoking will kill you and it is bad for your health and then you see him out back of the hospital taking a smoke break, HE is a hypocrite.

If a person professes to believe in the Bible and claims to be a Christian then cheats on their taxes, subscribes to Internet porn, never donates to charity, etc... That person is a hypocrite.

As far as Jesus' criteria for using the word Hypocrite, I truly believe it was used in that way. He spoke often of the Pharisees who proclaimed undying devotion to God and then used the faith of the believers for their own profit and gain.

A hypocrite is someone who contridicts themselves. However, most people don't take into account that people constantly change and grow. Maybe I made a statement yesterday but I changed my world view and thus perhaps something is no longer applicable, maybe I'll be called a hypocrite for it.

what was Jesus critiria for calling people hypocrites? Hopefully it was a contradiction in their own logic, but I don't know really.

The ones who show the attitude - Do as I say not as I do.

That is like when I was a child - the Baptist Preacher at the church I was forced to go to pretty much for almost a year made the Sunday sermon in some form or another about adultery. He would rail about how wrong it was, yet, he was committing it himself. I'm not even sure he had the decency to have a guilty conscience about not practicing what he preached.

I only use "hypocrite" when describing a 'christian' who preaches hatred, bigotry, discrimination and therefore violence against LGBT people.
This is a proper usage because according to the bible, Jesus stood for peace, tolerance and treating others as you would like to be treated. Therefore spreading hatred and bigotry is exactly the opposite of Jesus' teachings. If you spread such hatred through your thoughts, words, or actions, and have the gall to call yourself a 'christian,' you are a true hypocrite.

Note also that there are no quotes attributed to Jesus that are against LGBT people.

A hypocrite is someone who says one thing and does another - it's most powerful when used with regards to morality.

It doesn't have anything to do with worldview. It's just a matter of whether someone practices what they preach, which is why Jesus used the term so much. The religious leaders he saw and labeled as hypocrites were saying, "Oh, you have to do all of these things!" and yet they weren't doing any of it themselves.

The Greek word literally means "actor". In the Greek theater the same actor would play multiple characters, in different scenes, by changing masks. The theater would save money on actor's salaries that way.

A hypocrite is literally someone who is "playing a role". That is, someone who acts one way around a certain group of people, but who secretly acts a different way when he is alone or with another group of people. A person who's teaching, or his stated beliefs, do not match his actions.

I.E.: someone who is inconsistent.

A hypocrite is someone who says or preaches one thing, and then behaves in a completely different way.
I think everybody is a hypocrite at one point or another, because our ideas and philosophies are almost always better than we really are. As sad as that is, I suppose that beats having ideas and philosophies lower or worse than we really are:)

I think you are quite right. So many people throw out the label "hipocrite" when they themselves are hipocrites. What irony! I think you should limit your use of the word, everyone should. In my opinion, there is no criteria for deciding if calling someone a hipocrite is acceptable.
Jesus doesn't have criteria, either, i don't think. The only reason he could accuse people of being hipocrites is because he was perfect.

hypocrite is merely someone who goes against their own beliefs, ideas, and ways. not ours.
if they say they read the bible everyday, and yet they never pick it up, they are being hypocritical. if they preach not to do drugs, and yet go home at night and do so, they are being hypocritical.

we can't call someone hypocritical for going against our ideas or beliefs, because its going against their own, is when you use the word hypocritical in a conversation.

Jesus called the religious leaders back in his time hypocritical, because they said to follow the bible ,and do everything it said, and care about the people, when they did none of that, they only cared about themselves, and went against the bible, and condemed Jesus. that's why he called them hypocritical.
