I've always been partial to Lafroaig 20 year single malt from the Isle of Islay. I was a Berkeley undergrad when a friend initially introduced me to this unique wonder (interestingly he was black, but had an uncle who was a German U-boat commander in the Second World War--go figure!).
Lafroaig has perhaps one of the most unique tastes in the entire world of fine Scots Whiskies, filtered through the loamy peat that Islay has in abundence. The resulting smokey flavor marks it as a unique stand-out among all those ultra-smooth single malts that everyone claims they prefer (anyone can make a smooth single malt, but it takes talent to create a taste like this!)
Laproaig offers a 10-year, a 15-year, and a 20-year distillation, but the 20-year is quite pricey (it's also the best, IMHO). Granted your question is quite subjective, since ultimately one's taste in all things is based on individual personal (acquired) preference, but if you want to enjoy a dram of the vital fluid that warms the hearts of those who REALLY know their Scots Whiskies, you should try Lafroaig. Then decide for yourself, of course.
Try the following two URLs fpr more information about both Lafraig and similar Isle of Islay distillations:
http://www.islaywhiskysociety.com/laphroaig/index.html
and
http://www.scotchwhisky.com/english/about/malts/laphroab.htm
As for me, after a mere sip of this delicious decoction I'm ready to take on the entire English Army and even King Edward Longshanks, himself (may God bugger him eternally!). ARRRRR!

My favorite is Dalwhinnie. It's a 15 year old single malt and is SUPER smooth. It's about $45 a bottle and worth every penny. My friend also likes McCallen. Good luck.

johnnie walker blue and dewar's signature are both excellent blended scotch whisky. they are a bit pricey though. anything by johnnie walker is good and they have bottles for under $60 if you don't want to pay a whole lot.
