Yesterday I was sitting on a beach near my Gold Coast home when two F111's flew past a couple hundred metres out to sea and at treetop level, doing I guess, just below mach1. You could hear them coming, and I knew immediately, this is not a passenger aircraft. There is no more awesome looking plane and apparently, nothing in the inventory of the world's military that can adequately replace it, especially with its unique combination of long range and massive firepower. Try the following site about information regarding potential upgrades to the F111.

The F-111 is built using old technoligy and materials. The cost of modifying it to what is needed today is cost prohibitave. The F is fooling. It is not a fighter. It is only a light bomber. Although it was initially designed as a Fighter/Bomber it turned out to be too heavy and unmaneuverable to be a fighter. The F-111 does present a less than normal radar image but is not considered Stealthy and cannot be adapted to be so.

I hate to see great old airplane go to the scrap heap, but it cannot meet the requirements we need today.

Cost to much to keep all these diffrent aircraft according to the experts so they gonna go with just one type. However, I agree, for what it was made to do the F111 is a super aircraft.

The airframes on those are well over 30 years old. And the design is probably over 40 years old. There is only so much upgrading you can do.
