Hi there,

I have a daschaund named Leonard and we used to feed him once a day and our vet told us that's not good for him. We feed him once in the morning (when we eat before we leave for work) and once in the evening at our dinner time. We always leave a bit of kibble in a bowl during the day in case he get the munchies, which is highly unlikely because they tend to be finikey eaters. But we love him anyways. We make him homemade food usually. Boiled lean ground beef, white or brown rice, and boiled baby carrots. He loves it and the vet approves of it. Once in a while he said to give him canned food - you can used ground chicken or turkey as well. Hope this helps!

If it is an adult dog, it only needs to eat once a day. If it is a puppy then the younger it is the more times you need to feed it. Three times a day max. It isn't a good idea to leave the food out free choice because it can make them over weight fast and dachshunds get overweight easy. Read the back of the dog food sack to see how much to feed in a day. Good luck.

The important information is not how OFTEN you feed your dog, but how MUCH you feed your dog. High-quality foods will usually have a chart somewhere on the packaging that lists the amount that a dog of a particular size should eat each day. As long as you are feeding the right amount, it does not matter if you feed it all at one time or if you split it up into two or three smaller meals.

Depending on his/her age. Puppies need to eat more than once a day. When mine was a puppy, I fed him 3 times a day, small portions. Then I reduced it down to 2 times a day as he grew up. He is fully grown now and I feed him twice a day still but sometimes he wont eat all of it. If he does not have all of it consumed within an hour, I throw it out to the cat. I figure if he was hungry he would have eaten it, and I dont want him to get too fat.

I have a mini dachshund and I always have food in his dish. He eats when he is hungary. He never over eats, becuase he does not have to worry about when he is going to get his next meal. That is how some dogs over eat, becasue they have been so hungary waiting for food that they just eat everything in the dish, even though they are now stuffed. All of my animals that I have had always had their food dish full all the time. And none of them became overweight.

First, it depends on the age. If it is an adult dog, feed it three times a day.

Well it depends. How old is the dog? If the dog is under a year, usually your vet will tell you to leave food available for him at all times. I would consult your local petstore or vet to find out more.
