hypothetical situation in reference to the army or marines: if i went into either the army or marines as a private or private first class, what MOS would be the best for advancement? I was thinking it would be the infantry in either branch. does anyone know if this is true or what other MOS would be better for advancement. i would at least like to work my way up to high ranking NCO or even get a battlefield commision and become an officer. thanks.

As far as the marines go I know it is a lot harder to pick up rank in infantry becuase there are so many people that join that mos and having to many people in a certain mos makes it harder to gain rank becuase they only want so many of a certain rank especially when you get up there to sgt and above. But on the other hand if you are awsome at your pft and you have good pros and cons and good rifle range scores and score high on other things than you may be able to pick up rank at a faster rate

Aside from an admin position, which is already an over crowded MOS, advancements are mandatory up through E-4 in the Army. Infantry is a very respected field. I've known soldiers that have advanced to E-5 in under 2 years.

Just a tidbit, in the National Guard, you can get your officer commission with 2 years of college with a committment to complete your other 2 years and obtain your bachelor's within a reasonable time frame.

To become an officer, at least in the army, you have to have a college degree. You can go to college go through the ROTC program and the go to OBC (officer basic traing course) then commision as an officer.
I am pretty sure this is the same with all branches.

Like everyone else said its according to your knowledge and motivation level, But the coast guard is the most open for advancement. I made e5 in 5. I know a poster boy msater chief (E9) that made it in 14.
