Also why is meat from a pig called ham or pork?

The term "poultry" or "fowl" is a term applied to the animal itself just like cows can be referred to as "cattle" and pigs as "swine." These terms aren't directly connected to the food (meat) that comes from these animals.

Bacon is a method of preparing meat and not a type of meat itself. Traditional bacon is made from ham but it can also be made from turkey.

A chicken is a chicken is a chicken. whereas a cow can be many things:

Angus
Santa Gertrudus
Longhorn
Hereford
Jersey
Charlois
or one of many other breeds of cattle (cows) so they are lumped together under "beef" when you are preparing them for food.

Pork is the plural of pig, you buy and sell pork bellies not pig bellies, it is the other white meat.

You know, I really have no idea what I am talking about, I am just trying to get my two points so I can achieve the highest possible score on Yahoo, which by the way pays nada, nothing, zip.

So thank you for your question and the ability you gave me to gain two (count em) two whole points.

Chicken is Chicken.

Cows can be dairy cows (you generally don't eat dairy cows, but some places like McDonalds buy dairy cow meat to serve to people). Cows can also be beef cows (you don't milk them!).

Pigs produce ham, pork, and bacon. The difference is in the curing or preparing of the meat.

Mutton = sheep
Fish = fish
Game = wild deer, boar, duck and even rabbit
etc.

What do you care what the meat is called, as long as it is well prepared and tasty?

Ham is just one type of pork cut (the upper back legs).

Because cowen and pigen (sic) were already used in the English vocabulary. Cowen is a last name and pigeon is a bird.
