I mean, if it's a substitute for sugar, does that mean it's better for us. Is it less fattening? What is the deal with aspartame. Someone please enlighten me because I am in the dark here.

It's fat-free. Our taste buds react to it the same way they react to sugar, but our digestive system treats it like the non-nutritional chemical it is.

Nope, it's not fattening. As a matter of fact, it has very few calories. However, don't assume it's better for you than sugar. It is an artificial sweetener and, as such, can cause health problems. Some people even blame it for the "epidemic" of lupus and MS.

It is not fattening. I'm not sure it is better for us though. I have to admit I had some on my cereal this morning because I watch my calories (like most girls). I think what is natural is better for us though. I try to limit the amount of aspartame I have, just like margarine, etc. Hope this helps.

No, it's not fattening, but it can give you a vicious headache (short term)and has been known to cause tumors (long term), so I'd use splenda or stevia root instead.

No, it is not in itself, yet because it is sugary it will create cravings for sugary foods.

Aspertame has a large number of side effects that you should be aware of. It is nasty stuff.
