I suggest putting a small amount of olive oil in his food, about 1/4 tspn. Don't bathe him too much either because like the others said, it will only take away the natural oils that he needs for his skin. The type of food you feed can also be what is affecting his skin to itch, Sometimes dogs are allergic to an ingredient in their food. Take him to the vet if its really bad; he will probably recommend something like science diet sensitive skin.

How do you know the dog has dry, itchy skin? Chances are it has fleas (even if you can't see any doesn't mean there aren't any on him). He could have allergies from something. Heck, I had a dog allergic to GRASS once and even 5 minutes outside in it he'd itch for hours.
I'd look into other possibilities before rubbing it off as dry skin. Chances are, his dry skin is a result of something else.
Definately change his food but don't waste your money on Science Diet. Might as well feed the dog a pile of wood shavings--at least wood shavings are higher quality than Science Diet.
Talk to your vet about adding Benedryl to his diet and/or a cortisone shot. Consider giving your pup a Fish Oil capsule, once or twice per day too.

You really need to treat the skin internally - with good nutrition. My dog has dry skin, and requires a premium dog food, like Iams, that helped a great deal. I even sprinkle a little olive oil on the food for extra fat and oil to moisturize his skin from the inside out. Plus, he gets a scrambled egg every Saturday, again extra protein to help the skin and fur. After about 2 weeks, my dog's coat was beautiful. I am always getting compliments on the shine and sheen of his fur. Give it a try

It sounds like you are giving your dog too many baths and that could very well be the cause of your dogs dry skin. Try not giving him a bath for a month and see if that works.

Switch him to a great food like Innova, Wellness, or likewise. Also, if you can't get that expensive of food then get The Missing Link, that helps give dogs the vitamins and supplements they need. It will help keep the coat soft and shiny. Also, I would not recommend to bathe your dog more than 1 time per month.

Give your dog a bath every 3 to 4 weeks. I used skin so soft (spray), this helped mine. Good luck! The dog smells good too.

About a year ago, my dog got very itchy after Thanksgiving. Everytime we would have a party, he would be itchy. We asked the doctor and he said that my dog was probably allergic to someone's perfume or the fabric softener on their clothes. Maybe your dog has an allergy. I would just ask his vet.

my dog suffered from combination skin really oily around his head and neck and really dry every where else, i took him to the vet and found out it was caused by allergies to something in his food. the vet recommended bathing once a month, a doggy benedryl 1 to 2 times daily and a new dog food. i now feed him nutripet and his coat and skin have never been healthier.

Fill a spray bottle with 1 part apple cider vinegar to 1 part water. Spray him down with it and let air dry. Should help.
Also, only bathe your dog once a month at the most.

One of our dogs is a dashchund and he had the same condition on his rear back. We called our vet and he said to use Palmer's Cocoa Butter Formula. Just look up Palmer's Cocoa Butter on Yahoo and it will bring up some sites where you can buy it or you could probably find it somewhere like PetSmart. Just rub it on your dog's effected skin and follow the directions on the back. Hope this helps! It worked for us!
