Like all nations who want nuclear weapons they (both India and Pakistan) see it as the ultimate weapon. Once one or the other got nuclear weapons it was inevitable that the other would develop them because neither side could stand feeling that they were at a disadvantage militarily from the other. In some respects it might very well keep open war from flarring up between the two belligerents because no one wants to use nuclear weapons especially if they know the other side can destroy their cities with a retaliatory strike. Most won't admit it but the USA and USSR both being nuclear armed during the Cold War quite probably kept WWIII from ever happening because neither side was willing to risk the possibility of a war escalating to a nuclear exchange.

That being said the best solution is to solve the problem through peaceful negotiations and then hopefully eliminate the nuclear weapons from each of their arsenals.

A few weeks later, Gandhi said, 'The atomic bomb brought an empty victory to the Allied arms, but it resulted for the time being in destroying Japan. What has happened to the soul of the destroying nation is yet too early to see. The right answer for your question was given by Mahatma Gandhi Sixty One years ago. Two nations i.e. India and Pakistan which produced such a "Great Soul" is running behind the weapons of mass destruction is utterly bad.

I can't answer your question separately because the intention behind Nuclear weapons for both India and Pakistan is the same, killing people. If you, me or anyone else has at least 1% of humanity is residing in us, then we will never support the Nuclear weapons.

Aside from mutual protection I believe is how they see it, if they wanted to blow each other up they would have done it a long time ago, it's also for recognition. As much as we don't like it, those with the big guns get more respect in the world, others might disagree but see which country you pay more attention to when they talk, ie, which country gets mentioned in the news.

It's similar to the space thing the Chinese and South Africa are doing, it's a rep. thing as well as a protective measure. Anyone who builds nuclear weapons for destruction should never have them.

Pakistan is composed mainly of Muslims. The Pakistani BOMB could easily be transferred to Iran with which it shares a common border.
Maybe they've already done that ( heck. some of the militants ( and there are a lot of them in Pakistan ) could have stolen them for Iran.

India,of course, has them to counter balance with Pakistan and, more importantly, China.
