My parents won't let me get another dog and I really want one. We have a maltese currently but that's like the family dog and she's more attached to my mom. I really want my own dog. How can I convince them that I can take care and pay for the other dog and they won't have to chip in. I even suggested given up christmas!

i am currently going through the same thing. except my mom has a gigantic husky. but i know how u feel !

try asking them for another maltese. that's probably the best bet, since u already have one. what kind of dog do u want? if u want a big dog, then tell your parents that big dogs are better protection. if u want a small dog, then say it can be a 'playmate' for the maltese. are u sure u want a dog? if u get one, just remember that u will have to pay the expenses, and i kno that dogs are very expensive....so be sure you're ready for that. however, if u really want one (which i think u do) then just tell ur parents (convince them) that u are responsible enough to take care of one. have something to back u up though...do some research on what particular breed u want. then explain the pros and cons (but mostly the pros hehe) to your folks. also, tell them that having a dog all ur own is grrrreat experience for u for later in life (when u start having kids), because dogs are a lot like kids. if u get a dog that is all yours, it would be like having a child. dogs need lots of love. there are so many dogs out there that don't receive the love that they deserve. if u have extra space in your heart to love a dog, then u deserve one !! (ha, tell that to your parents)

of course, u could also ask them when they're in a reallllly good mood...

"Also I will still care for it even if I have school, my mom would only have to let it outside to go to the bathroom." So you expect your dog is just sit twiddling his toes for 7 or 8 hours while you're in school? Not gonna happen. Your mom WILL have to look after him during that time. She doesn't want to. And what happens when you go to college in a couple of years? You can't take the dog with you. End of discussion. "but I really still want to be responsible for something" That is a poor reason to get a pet, and shows LACK of responsibility. What I suggest you do is volunteer at the humane society or another pet rescue, where you can really make a difference in unwanted pets' lives.

Parents know things we don't sometimes. Dogs, although I LOVE them to death, are a constant chip from the income and take much time out of the day in making sure they are healthy. Perhaps your parents are only doing what's best...

I have a Maltese too and this is my best friend, no kidding, so........I think maybe if you mention another Maltese to your mom that perhaps she would go for that.

Just tell your parents that if you get a new dog you'll train him. Like how to get the newspaper for dad or fetch mom her slippers.

just bring one home and say you cant return it because the people you got it from moved and thats why they had to give you the puppy. Thats what I did with my last dog.

I would do the old visual trick, bring home a puppy let them see it and fall in love with it. My dad fell for it everytime :) good luck!

Puppy eyes or try screaming at the top of your lungs if that does not work do chores for no reason to prove you are responsible.
