Hello,

I was not really sure whether it is normal to get your first period at age 11, so I looked it up on Wikipedia. According to Wikipedia's article on menstration, "Menstruation forms a normal part of a natural cyclic process occurring in healthy women between puberty and the end of the reproductive years. The onset of menstruation, known as menarche, occurs at an average age of 12, but is normal anywhere between 8 and 16. Factors such as heredity, diet and overall health can accelerate or delay the onset of menarche."

However, I was 10 (on the verge of 11) when I got my first period, to my mother's shock. I have heard that the first menstration is occurring in younger girls at an earlier age than previous generations, and vitamin-enriched foods may be part of the reason. Thus, I have been menstrating for about two-thirds of my life now (I'm 29). I get cramps with mine, but at least mine are regular now so that I can predict when I'll have that bad weekend each month.

Each young woman is unique and different. Your genetic makeup and everything about you is due to genetics and hereditary reasons. Having your period at 11 is very normal. My daughter is almost 10 and has been "developing" scince she was 8. We imagine she will get her period between now and her 11th birthday. I do hope there is someone who has informed you of all the female issues that arise at this time of "blooming". Good Luck and don't worry-even if you feel weird or strange YOU ARE NORMAL!

Yeah, I was 12. I had a friend who started at 9 though. Also one who didn't start till she was like 17. It just depends on the girl and family traits.

I believe so. It varies for many women. I didnt get mine until I was 18 so imagine that! Of course it was a family trait for me.
