You hear atheist and other free thinkers claim this all the time. Can anyone explain what they could possibly mean by this?

Tyranny of the order: "Resistance is futile. You will be assimilated." (comply with the collective hive mind in every way or you will be blown out of space).

I think it's a decent analogy for a cult (heavy prohibition on free will or independent thinking in any way), but most large-scale religions aren't quite that controlling...

Yeesh I never thought of that. It could be assimilate or die, as in your soul. Then there is the fact that the Borg accepts you as a drone AFTER they alter you physically and mentally to be accepted in their collective. There is one leader that is undisputed and everyone has their own job with no rank, all below the Queen.

However there are differences like, the Borg will leave their people to die, when a christian wouldn't. Of course the assimilated don't have freewill to choose, since Resistance is futile to the Borg.
