I heard that Border Collies are supposed to be able to figure things out (such as herding sheep, training, agility, etc) better than any other dog breed. Although German Shepards are also pretty smart.

I would have to say the most clever dog breed is the Irish Setter. I currently have two Irish and one English setter that reside in my home. My oldest Irish is a thinker. We had to replace our pantry door because he had figured out how to open it. He always sits there and watches you from afar and waits his turn which he seems to always figure our so he can come in for the steal. I think he also thinks about the consequences of his actions to and ways them to see if the reward is greater than the price. An example would be when backing Christmas cookies he likes to steal a few off the counter but always knows that he will end up in his crate but steals them anyways and then just goes to the crate because he knows that is were he is going to end up.

Clever how?
Most dogs that are independent will be good at working by themselves but are not so good at being trained by a human (hound, terrier). Others are really good at doing a particular job and may rely on a human to tell it what to do (working and sporting breeds). But they all can be smart. Just different sorts of smart.

I would have to say a german shepherd dog..... They are not number one in anything but they are number 2 in everything.... I have seem amazin things out of my shepherd....
First when i first got her and was developing care habits I must have forgot to feed her..I was living in a motel at the time and had all my food on a shelf in the corner...when i came home she had placed my loaf of bread in her food dish to rremind me to feed her.....did not eat it or even put a hole in it... it sure did get the point across though...
Second i was breaking her from the trash.... and she strung it all over the room.... I got on to her but the next day instead of stringing it all over the room she put it in a pile next to it like ok well I still want to go through it.... is this ok.... Of course i still had to get on too her but for cleverness.....
well you decide.

top three are Border Collies (not the best tempermant and they need alot of attention and exercise), Australian Sheepdog (better tempermant than Border Collie just as much attention and exercise) and German Sheppards. The dumbest are Afghan Hounds
