Very sorry. Like humans, they will never be forgotten but time will help to heal. You may be too sad for a new puppy but your other furry friend may get over it's mourning quicker with the help of a new friend.

Sorry about your loss. It just plain sucks!

I hope that time will help to heal some of the sorrow you are feeling.

Two years ago, I lost my 5 year old dog to nasal cancer. We were able to make her comfortable, but were not able to put the cancer into remission. We had a 2 year old dog at the same time. For 6 weeks, every time I took him for his walk he would stop on the driveway, turn and look at the door. I would have to coax him to continue walking .The fact that I had tears didn't help him any either. One day, he just continued walking with me.

One of the things that I did, for both of us, was keep her dog bed and bowls where the puppy could still smell her. He still sleeps in the same spot as she did. The sorrow may be easier because the sad memories are replaced with happier ones, but we still miss her. Many people have offered us a puppy or dog. We're still not ready. I take the puppy to "puppy camp", which is doggie day care, once a month so he can play.

There's a line in a book called, "The Little Prince". It talks about how time heals all sorrow, and that in time certain things will remind you of the happiness instead of the sorrow. Take time for both of you to get there.

I'm sorry about your dog. I agree with Sunshine that she does need extra attention now more than ever. Even if you are not ready to buy a new puppy, perhaps she would like to make friends with some friendly dogs in your neighborhood. Just make sure that they meet eachother outside, away from their houses to avoid terretorial fighting. You might enroll her in puppy training classes or see if their is a Bark Park in the area. I live in Virginia and there are two here. (one at Buckroe Beach, and one at Sandy Bottom Nature Park) a Bark Park is a fenced in dog playground with agility equipment, lots of toys, a water fountain that is designed with two spigots. One is for people, and the other is close to the ground for dogs, and boxes of poo bags to clean up after puppy. In the one in Buckroe, there is even a separete fenced off section for small dogs! It only costs like $10 a year for passes to the Bark Park. Maybe if she could be around other dogs, it would help her.

I know it is hard, but until your ready to get another dog give the puppy some extra attention. If the dog stops eating or something serious like that, you need to either take them to the vet, or do the very hard thing and get a new dog no matter how hard it is.

Plant a red fern. Just kidding! Maybe it would be less painful to get another animal, such as a bird or a ferret. But don't let your puppy near it, she might eat it!
Seriously though, dogs get along well w/ other species esp. if you introduce them at a young age!
Sorry for your loss. Hope ya'll feel better soon.

Hey Katie,
You're both just missing your friend. If the other dog hadn't brought so much joy into your life, you wouldn't miss it. Just hold onto each other - this will pass. When you feel sad, hold your puppy and talk about the fun times. Good Luck.

Sorry Katie about your dog. I know it hurts when you lose a pet that you loved. It may take you and the other dog time to get over your dogs passing. I wouldn't get another dog right now, wait a couple of months.

I am so sorry. Losing a beloved pet is like losing a child. The puppy will need lots of extra attention and love right now. It can be good therapy for both of you.
