Baptism removes original sin, you are reborn, you receive God's Grace, You become a member of the church and a member of the body of Christ.

I'm not 100% sure on this it's been a long time and I am a lapsed Catholic.

Baptism is a public rite where you proclaim your desire to love and grow in Christ. It does not save you or make you a member of a church. It is an act of obedience, where you are identifying with the death and the life of Christ. It ought to challenge the believer to live even more passionately for Christ. It is a ritual that has as much signifigance as the sincerity of the believer's heart. I guess another effect would be that believers often are attacked strongly spiritually after their baptism so that's why it's important for the body of believers around the believer to pray for him/her.

Hope this helps,

Nickster
