A relative has just received a letter from the police saying that he was doing 47mph in a 40mph limit - what penalty will he receive? When he got home he immediately opened the letter and is absolutely gutted and so I don't like to ask what points and/or fine he gets.

He doesn't remember what speed he was doing so can't really dispute the speeding charge. Also, I think it must have been a temporary camera as I've never seen a fixed camera on that stretch of road but the mobile speed camera vans are regular visiters (although usually well hidden).

Usually it is 3 points and a £60 fine. you generally have to go to court to have the points put on your license and they last for 3 years.
it depends really on the road and the vechile he was driving because they may be abit softer on him with it only being 7mph over.

my mate was driving a van with a trailer and was going 76mph in 60 zone but because of the type of vechile he was only supposed to be going max of 50!

I don't know where you are from but in Canada, you receive the fine and no points as they have no way of identifying who was driving the vehicle.

Also, they usually send you a blow up of the photo showing just your car. You can ask to see the full picture and if you can read any other part of a licence plate in the pic, you have reasonable doubt and courts can throw out your ticket.

My suggestion, if there are no points involved, pay the ticket and complain to your local government rep that it is nothing but a cash cow. If points are involved, find someone who can help you fight it, and avoid the points!!

A letter is sent to the address of the person the license plate is registered to with a request to send money to the lazy azzes who use cameras. It should also contain a picture of the vehicle and driver.

I don't understand why anyone would trust those devices... radar is notoriously inaccurate during thunderstorms, and the speed trap cameras are machines.... fallible.

If he accepts he did this, he will get a fine (£40-£60??) and some penalty poitns (3?). Most insurance companies will nto impose special terms just because of a single speeding offence, so he should not worry too much. Still annoying!

If he was in a school zone then the amount of the speed ticket will vary. the letter should have had the amount of the ticket on it. but you need to call the number if it is in the letter and tell you where to go and pay the ticket.

ok go straight out and find a book written by an ex traffic cop, he will tell you how to get out of it, i am sure there are loads of ways out of it such as fill everyhing in on the form but dont sign it, if they
dont spot it and take it to court you can apeal, if they spot refil it in wwhen they send it back with something else wrong, i think they have to have it sorted in 3 months or its void, try ebay for an e book on how to get out speeding

a fixed penalty a 3 points on your licence. If you contest it, you may end up paying a lot more. It's a way to make you pay up.

if you are in the US, you just have to pay the fine. my dad once got a speeding ticket like that in my car, so the ticket came addressed to me. they can't prove who was driving so they can't put the points on your license.
