Absolutely, I use a LOT of yogurt, cream and sour cream in my cooking (Indian, French and Gourmet Mexican). The flavor will change slightly (tangier with the yogurt, "creamier" with the sour cream) and you can decide which you like best, but they are very interchangable.
(Oh and if you use Mexican style cream or yogurt and want a more "sour" taste, just add lemon juice)

It sounds as though the substitution will work in your case. As yogurt becomes more available, it is being used in recipes that formerly would have listed sour cream anyway. They are both curdled dairy products, but sour cream is generally a more highly-processed food with the potential for more preservatives or other additives, hence the growing preference for yogurt.

Yes, but DON'T Allow the sour cream to get too hot or it will curdle.
If it's a sauce you make with the cube steak drippings...make sure to take it off your heat source first!
Also, when using sour cream heated, NEVER USE FAT FREE...it's really grainy in texture and will ruin your recipe!

In sauces, dressings and dips plain yogurt is a wonderful substitute. It has (I think) better flavor and is lower in fat. You can even "punch" it up a bit by adding a squeeze of lemon juice and stirring it through before you add it to your recipe.

ABSOLUTELY...and 10 times better for you. Sustitute it in a dip, you won't go back to sour cream, I mean c'mon your eating pure fat when you eat sour cream!
