A guy I work with dresses funny on the weekends, hides in the weeds, blows a silly duck whistle and then BLAMO! shoots defenseless ducks with a shotgun. Where's the sport in that? And then he brags about it on Monday like it makes him macho - the rest of us make jokes behind his back.

A common thread among these answers is the "communing with nature" appeal. I can understand that...but why does enjoying nature have to end with a duck getting blown to smithereens?

Good question, I hate the "gammie" taste of dark meat, tried once and my eyes watered instantaneously and heaved.
I think they like the "huddling" thing together in that covered hole that no one else can see. What is that they do down there (there's nothing to see), where they keep each other company for hours on end. What do they do to keep each other entertained for hours and hours?

It's not about macho! It's waking up at 3 am. (which is sleeping in for me) Getting your dog up, stopping by to pick up a couple of friends. then walking a mile to your favorite hole with 100 lbs of gear on your back. ( Decoys, shells, gun, COFFEE, and other assorted items) setting up the dekes in a perfect illusion of a flock of live ducks. and then sitting, talking with your friends, listening to live ducks talking with one another. All the while listening to the cadence of their calls, learning what YOU can do to improve your calling. Until the awe of a perfect sunrise. One that is the most stunning you have ever seen with the thin sliver of light blue ever receding the dark. Slowly turning into reds, then oranges, then back to an azure blue like none ever seen before. (no matter if you saw the same thing the weekend before, It is still the best) Then as life is coming to your favorite pond, you see, hear, but most importantly FEEL the importance of humility. For you are PART of the grand design of life. You see the ducks fly up, that have silently swam into your spread of dekes, you see all the other flocks from around the pond take flight. You enjoy the sights sounds, and smells of nature. As you were intended to. Up close and personal.

Now can you understand why he enjoys it so much? He is surrounde by beauty every where he looks.

I just love hearing people talk about hunting when they have no idea about the sport of the ethics and tradition behind it.....make sure you know what you are talking about before you start making assumptions......I love duck and goose hunting...I get to do my two favorite things...sit is a blind listing and watching nature....and shooting birds.....I agree with the fact that if you hunt...eat what you kill...or at least know someone you can give the meat to. I personally don't like duck meat, but I have friends that do....so nothing goes to waste.

I love any kind of hunting. I especially love wing shooting which is any bird hunting whether it be duck, quail, dove, etc. I despise anyone who hunts solely for the horns or hides and doesn't eat what they kill. They are the biggest wusses of all. Unfortunately the world is full of those kinds of jerks. If shooting a duck or any other bird doesn't seem fun to you try shooting skeet or clay pigeons. I'm sure you will find that very entertaining. Some people just don't know how to be humble, therefore they open themselves up to ridicule such as your co-worker. Not all bird hunters are like him thankfully.

Sitting in a blind at sunrise, watching your dog wake up to the calls of birds. Watching the sun come up as the ducks fly in.. Working the call to see if you can get them to fly in closer.

Enjoying the smell of marsh grass, mown hay, the sky sunny or raining. Getting away from the TV, the house and the old lady. Comradiery with friends.

It's not about macho, if it were we'd go to Golds Gym and shove steroids in our arms. It about finding solitude and peace in a sport you enjoy.

What's macho about going to supermarket?
You idea of the outdoors is your lawn. Wildlife to you is the dog next door. Perhaps you should go out with him sometime, see for yourself. There is a world beyond the housing development & the 7-11. Besides, ever had duck?

Duck does not taste good. It tastes like liver. I love to duck hunt though. It's the thrill of hiding in the weeds and calling the duck in to your decoys you have spread so beautifully in front of you. They don't even know you're there. Your heart races. I'm a women and absolutely love duck hunting. Tons of action.

Duck tastes good, and if you tried it you would probly fail. It takes quite a bit of skill to even hit a duck when it's flying, much less drop it from the sky. You shopping at the supermarket is just delegating the task of killing to a butcher.

I don't think I need to explain it, as many of the answers before are great. My question is why do you make jokes behind his back. Does he make fun of how you choose to occupy your time away from work. Why don't you tell him to his face, give him a chance to tell you why he loves it. I personally don't think there is much sport in golf, but I don't make fun of people who spend their weekend golfing. Perhaps you are a bigger hypocrite than you think. Give it some thought please.

don't knock it til you try it. it's more of a lifestyle, a way to socialize and enjoy nature than it is a sport.
