There are some roadblocks to install Windows XP on to your Sony Vaio. First, if you already installed Windows XP on to your Dell computer you can't install it again on to any other computer. Each copy of Windows XP installation CD requires a product key to activate it. Microsoft has made serious effort to stop piracy of their software. After installing Windows XP, Windows automatically communicates over the Internet to Microsoft's website. The product key is recorded. Once recorded, if you try to install Windows XP on to another computer, Windows will once again automatically connect to Microsoft website via the Internet. This time however, Microsoft's website will detect that the product key is already in use and therefore not allow you to activate it.

The second roadblock is the different computer companies. Dell, along with almost every other company which sells their own brand of computers, supplies a custom Windows XP installation CD. The CD contains not only the Windows XP operating system but also software programs unique to Dell computers. If you try to install Dell Windows Installation CD on to a Sony computer, there is a good chance it won't work.

I am sorry to say but it is likely you need to buy a new copy of Windows XP Installation CD. You can buy a copy over at www.newegg.com for $89.00 (home edition).
