It depends....cats are very independent and they don't always listen dogs do listen but then not all breeds of dogs listen though dogs are harder to take care of puppies chew on everything and dig when they get older and cats shed(some more than others) cats usualy pee and poop in their litter box dogs go where ever they feel like it and require training to poop and pee in their proper place and dogs shed too but not as much, basicly you just have to compare and get to know the responsibalities of each animal and chose for yourself cause both animals need attention and proper care so you chose...cat or dog.

A cat would be better there is less work to keep them happy, and they'll go in the litter box. I would suggest Tidy Cat for Small spaces, it clumps and if you keep it cleaned out every morning/night never is there a smell. It would be great for your basement. Try getting an older kitten or a younger cat so they aren't as lonely as a young kitten would be by themselves.

As a student I'm guessing you don't have a whole lot of time to spend with a pet, so I would definitely say cat since they're a lot more independent. And I would also think about an adult pet, since kittens and puppies need a lot of your time to be trained.

Getting a cat or dog is a long term commitment. Are you going to be able to bring the dog or cat with you if you have to move?

A cat or kitten is less work, is happy just to be left alone and fend for itself, without the need for constant compaionship, so I would suggest a cat or a kitten.

I'd get one of each, though you might want to consider adopting an adult dog or cat from a shelter. They are especially in need of homes.

definatly a kitten!!!!!! they're sooooooo cute and sweet!!!!!!! low maintence and they give you just as much affection as dogs do. cats don't care if they are left alone for a long period of time. they know how to occupy themselves very easily. please get a kitten from the SPCA or animal shelter. poor kittens there need good homes. HIH!!!
