We are stationed in the states, we were in Japan. We can't stand our new base, it is NOT family friendly, the schools are horrible !! Where our base is located is right next to an extremely bad neighborhood, so bad in fact there are parts that are actually forbidden for us to go into. My spouse and I are seriously considering me going to my hometown and living there. We just don't understand how this will affect us once he gets new orders and like Tri Care. Can I use another bases hospital, my hometown is 30 mins. drive from Tinker, could we use that hospital? Also his squadron for this base is being taken out of the AEF cycle, and by next summer all military positions will be contracted to civilians. When he gets the new orders will they move us from my place of residence? (in Ok.) Or from the base he is at ? That is one of the major worries for us. Have any of you done this and financially speaking were you able to swing it ??

We have been here almost a year, and let me just say it's not getting any better. When my husband came home from Iraq, he was in shock. (concerning the kids)
We have thought about moving, but traffic here is too much of a hassle and to be honest it is sooooo expensive around here. Not too mention that there are major gang problems around. I know there are problems everywhere, but where we are is just OVER the top. (we are in the DC area)

You can move your family elsewhere and use the facilities of the nearby military installation without problems. You may need a waiver to get BAQ in lieu of installation housing, if housing is available. You may not get VHA for living away from the duty station, if your new home is more expensive than the area surrounding the duty station.

As far as future moves go, if your home is closer to the new duty station than the old duty station, the military probably will pay for the move. However, if your home is further from the new duty station than the old, you will have to pay out of pocket for the difference in mileage.

The best way to find this out is to contact the local housing and transportation offices at your current duty station. I would also ask for an MFR (Memorandum For Record) about what was told to you, that way you have a reference if someone tries to change the policy after the fact.

Are you new there? I hated the base we are at until I gave it some time. It's so hard to move from place to place, exspecially with kids. I feel for you!!

You can live elsewhere though and use other facilities. You will just have to go and enroll in deers there. I think they will do one household move from where ever you stuff is at. I don't know for sure about that one. Can you DH call TMO? Has he tried for a special duty assignment? That's how we got out of our last base.

BAH will remain at the rate of the duty station location, regardless of where you move to. You will only be relocated from the duty station , not your hometown. if it's a DITY move, they will only reimburse you based on what it would have cost them to move you from the duty station to your new command. If it's handled by an outside company, you may end up having to pay out of pocket for the additional travel time involved. getting to your hometown. You will NOT be reimbursed for moving on your own without orders. your spouse may end up having to maintain quarters out in town if he is unable to secure Bachelor housing..in many instances GEO Bachelors are no longer authorized base quarters, so you would be havingto maintian 2 household on one BAH rate.. that of the current duty station.

Transferring your Medical and Dental bennies will be the easiest and least annoying.

Isn't there a family assistant office located on your base? Call the 800 number for Tri care, switching your location for medical care is easy enough, but it sounds like you need some immediate & local ideas.

sound to me like your husband is assigned to the security forces. I was stationed in germany and now my family and i are stationed at POPE AFB and this place sucks BIG time let me tell you. I would say that Tricare will be fine, but you will have to reregister and reenroll at the hospitol you want to go to. I hope this helpsand good luck

Perhaps you should talk to your CO about that, he/she should be able to help.
