u cant put xp right into dos from bootup, since xp doesnt really have dos installed.
what u can do is this press and tap f8 just before the first windows xp screen and choose safe mode with command prompt.
or if u want to put the machine directly into dos u would need to use a eg windows 98/me bootdisk u can get this from http://www.bootdisk.com

DOS is unuseable in XP if your partitions are formatted as NTFS... However, if your partitions are FAT32, then just simply create a bootable DOS diskette and boot from it..

Or

You can try pressing F8 before Windows load... Choose the option that says "Safe Mode with Command Prompt"....

When you get to the command line... Type HELP /? and hit ENTER.... You will be given a list of available commands.

If you need help on how the command works just simple type the command followed by a slash + question mark...

Example: LABEL /?

This will then show you how to invoke the command...

Good luck.

Hold the F8 key down when the machine is booting and then select one of the command line options.

What are you trying to do? If you just want to use a dos command or run a program directly in dos then use "Command Prompt" in the start menu under accessories.
