Well, first of all, it's spelled VOODOO or VERDUN.

It's a religion that mixes african religious rights with the catholic mass and it all comes together at a Peristiel or Peristeil which is usually an open sided structure, if it's even covered at all.

The 'service' is very much like a Catholic Mass except the food that is prepared for the offitory is real and it's eaten after the service. The corn or flour meal drawings are done to invoke various entities and the corn or flour is put away for the next service.

There is a tremendous difference between a REAL Voodoo ceremony and the commercial Voodoo ceremonies you see done in the large cities, which are done for the paying tourists.

Part of the ceremony and belief system, is the entering of a person's body by one of the Voodoo entities and they will then act out in a certain way so everyone knows which entity are occupying the 'horse'.

Most, if not all, Haitians believe in Voodoo even if they don't practice. There are also groups in the U.S. that practice that religion.

It IS a religion and it IS very serious and, if you are even remotely thinking about getting invovled in it... THINK TWICE... because when you mess with Voodoo... it will mess with you.!

I don't. As I understand it, it's what they call a 'syncretic' religion - mostly a combination of Yoruba and Catholocism. Yoruba is an eastern African religion with a pantheon of spirit deities, who need to be kept satisfied and who can intercede in human life if they want. The Catholic 'face' to it was apparently essential in the continuation of the religion in the New World. Cuban Santeria is a similar thing.

How many practise it is almost impossible to say for sure, because most Vodun practitioners, under pressure from bigots who see it as 'evil', will call themselved Catholic - but it could be as high as 80% of Haiti, and there could be as many as five million followers in the USA.
