First of all, the bible read from should be the King James Version. The pastor has to be called by God to preach rather than choosing preaching for a career. I won't support a pastor that insists on living in luxury. I prefer a small church so I can get to know everyone and they can get to know me. I will not attend a church that has a female pastor, not that I am being chauvnistic but because that is what the bible says. I won't attend a church that have liberal views on homosexuality. I found the right church in western North Carolina.

My first stop would be the rectory so I could meet with the Reverend or minister. Then I would attend a service and see what the congregation is like... are they nice, accepting and open to new comers? The sermon that is given and the way the whole service is handled make a big difference, too. I would also be on the lookout for the hipocrits... every church has them.

Two immediate, outward things that I always look for whenever I set foot in a Catholic parish that I've never been to before:
1) Does it have kneelers? (If it doesn't, it means that the people are not being encouraged or required to kneel before Christ in the Blessed Sacrament. It means that the pastor and/or the parish in general don't take the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist seriously.)
2) Are the confession times clearly posted for all to see? (If not, it means that the parish people are not encouraged to go to confession. It means that the pastor and/or parish don't take the sacrament of reconciliation and the confession of sins seriously.)
If the answer to either of these questions is "no," I talk to the pastor about it and ask why.
If it's in my home archdiocese, I tell the archbishop -- which isn't a hard thing for me to do, because I work for the archdiocese and his office is right down the hall.

The 'church' is not a building. I don't look for anything in particular when seeking a place to worship, because I do it everywhere. At school, at home... and yes, in the shower.
What I'm getting at is that the church is the body of Christ. The church is Christians, believers, etc. It is sickening to hear people say that they like this church because of its worship, or that church because of the preacher. People are so caught up in making worship pleasurable for themselves that they forget what its all about. They forget what the church really is.

First, I consider wether the church preaches God's word. Then I look to see if the people are kind and caring and if the Holy Spirit is there. Finally, I look to see if the church is a happy church(churches where all people do is frown make me uncomfortable.)

1. The truth.
2. The truth.
Be wary of Churches that just tell you what you want to hear to make you "feel good" Following God is not easy, but it is simple.
Peace!

By this shall men know that ye are my disciples, if you have love one for another. I understand that to mean being able to give as well as receive brotherly christian love. Also, beware, inordinate affection is not brotherly christian love
