As you know, much of the funding and support that Hezbollah receives is from Syria and Iran. The Lebanese government is under heavy influence from those countries, particularly Syria. This situation makes the politics involved in asserting control over southern Lebanon very difficult.

The Lebanese are very interested in maintaining sovereignty over their country, but do not want to go on the offensive to do it. Syria, Iran, the U.S. and Israel all realize that an offensive move into southern Lebanon, whether by Hezbollah or the national army, will likely be viewed as an "attack by proxy" on behalf of Syria and/or Iran. This would provoke the U.S. and Israel to move for sanctions against those countries.

That being said, the national army is far too weak to hold southern Lebanon. It is poorly funded and lacks any air power now that Israel destroyed any useful runway for the airplanes.

Thus, whether the reason is for military or political reasons, the Lebanese will act against Israel very cautiously at this juncture.

One of the reasons that the Israelis agreed to pull out of Lebanon in the early 90s was a UN Resolution (no. 1559? Not sure, but I'm sure someone will tell me!) requiring the Lebanese government to deal with Hesbollah (or however it's supposed to be spelled in English). If you recall, Israel invaded in order to deal with Hesbollah, because the Lebanese "army" wasn't doing anything about it.

However, after 20 years (on and off) of Israeli occupation, I'd be very surprised if Lebanon actually had much left in the way of an army. And then there's the minor point of the Israelis bombing every Lebanese road, bridge and fuel depot they could lay their planes on, so even if the Lebanese government wanted to mobilise, it wouldn't have been able to.

Don't you watch/listen to the news/read newspapers/browse news websites? Maybe you should.

I guess Lebanese has any good army so this is why they didn't do nothing until now. I believe also they are looking the Hezbollah was their army. Right now, they sayed, they want to send 15.000 soldiers to the south Lebanon at the border by Israel. I'm wondering who they will be????

Good question! Only they know for sure, but most likely the tribal system that is the basis of most mid-east regions and countries,is basically like this,"If you ain't with you must be against us."Each side has convinced themselves and their children of each generation that we are the one and only way to live, pray so on and so forth, most talk about tolerance but mostly it's just that-talk! Old transgressions real and perceived are just about never forgiven or forgotten.Which bring on new ones real and perceived. The chain just continues on and on.

What Lebanese "army" are you referring to?

They didn't start the war...the people scared of "jewish might" are the innocent civilians getting slaughtered everyday...a real irony in light of Israel's beginnings.

Because it's not against the Lebanese, it's against the Hezbolla.
