3 main reasons:

1) i think most reason have forgotten why they go to church. If you listen to the reasons why people don't go to church- they're so "me" centered. i didn't like the music. i didn't like the people. i think the message was too long, etc. We forgot that we go to church to worship God and to encourage others. That's really important. I was a Sunday School Teacher for 11 years- i'm now a youth pastor- but i remember during that time i was given a Friday Night Off. At the time some of our youth would lead our Friday Night Bible Studies (so it's not that i was going to learn very much) but i just felt it important to be there to encourage the kids who were leading. That night one of my kids was planning on running away from home cuz she had got into a fight with her mom over grades and stuff... i was able to comfort her and encourage her to go home and make things right with her mom... (it was a great reminder that we don't always go to church just for ourselves and to meet our personal needs).

2) People haven't been invited in a kind loving way. i think this is an area Christians just have to be more faithful at- just invite people and don't get so bent out of shape if people say no. Pray and ask...

3) People haven't made a habit to worship God. People all worship - and most people worship themselves. All the reasons people give- people are hypocrites at church, etc., miss the point. Yes people are hypocrites- but everyone gives an account to God, and once again we're not there for people. How can we worship God and then ignore his command to not forsake meeting together (Hebrews 10:24-25). So i think in those cases you see people worshipping whatever makes them feel good or is comfortable.

Hope that helps,

Nickster

I believe the reason is because of church politics. Most churches have trustee boards and/or financial officers, and there is usually some kind of conflict. The deacon board can also create a lot of problems. When any of these groups bump heads, there are always problems. The congregation finds out what is going on and stop attending church. Pastors become greedy and churches have too many collections and offerings, trying to support them. It's all about politics and cliques..

The question should be "why do people go to church?" Historically, people have turned to religion because they need an explanation for things, however fictitious. Early humans needed an explanation for storms, the sun, the moon, etc. People today still need explanations and reasons, but for slightly more abstract things.

Religion also can provide emotional support, be part of a community identity, and serves many other important social functions. . As a phenomenon, it is remarkably resistant. Christianity, like all religions, is profoundly rife with contradictions, prejudice, and ... well, insanity. That it persists is fascinating, and a testimony to how little humans have changed psychologically from our cave men days.

I have to agree with those who responded with the hypocrites notion. I mean, take my dad for instance: he claims to be such a great Christian, yet he is always angry, getting mad about any STUPID little thing. I can't stand how two-faced he can be. yet he does not see it!!! that's the crazy thing!

I don't really like to put the blame on anyone else for my behavior, but this did make a lot of sense to me. However, I feel that I do not attend church because I am a lazy bum. My heart wants to be there (along with the rest of me), but I don't make a big enough effort to attend. I do wish I could change this. Because even though church IS full of hypocrites, that should not keep me from hearing the Word of God.

To many Churches today are more concerned about the doctrine of the Church than they are about the Word of the Lord. I am more concerned about the Word of the Lord than the doctrine. This is one of the reasons I don't go. There is to much conflict in the religious circles that is not taught in the Bible. To many religious organizations thinks that theirs is the only true way. The only true way is to follow the Word of the Lord. If all of the religious organizations of the world would just understand we love the same Jesus, God and Holy Spirit and quit calling for the separation, we would all be better off.

Because a large majority of people in Churches these days are not Christians. If we actually followed Christ, and lived like he lived, and wanted to serve him, the world would be a much better place. For now though we have this fake Christianity. And I don't think it will ever get better.

Their too much of a social scene. A lot of people go just because they feel like they have to or need to and others go because they feel like they'll be judged if they don't. So why not just skip all the hypocrites and socialites and worship thy God in your own home. A lot of the churches want people to get involved, but to be reasonable, who has time for that anymore?

I feel all religion has grown into a business....not a place for spirituality....
The difference between religion and spirituality is:

Religion is sitting in Church thinking about fishing...Spirituality is fishing thinking about God.

Churches/Religion has not changed with the times and therefore are not as relevant as they once were. In small communities the Church was the place where groups were and things were happening....now they don't participate in the community like they once did.

Because they dislike having "sh1t" flung on them.

Also, in the Bible it says "in the last days, the Waters of Babylon will DRY UP." Meaning that "the waters" being the people. Then in Revelation, it shows where the Whore of Babylon will be destroyed (the Whore being the world of religion and all the merchants and kings of the world will cry because they will lose business and friendship with her. So, no more Bible Bookstores, stainedglass companies, friendships with Kings, etc. No more starting wars or creating "terrorism" just from her words alone.

Because they think it's a waste of time. Either they don't believe in religion or they think they can figure out things for themselves without some preacher telling them what to do. The only reason to go to church is to see friends, and none of my friends go to church, so why should I?
