Why should it bring bad luck, because it's black sand? I've never heard of this. The black sand of some beaches is due to that particular place having a volcano.

If you follow Jesus no sand will have any power over you. Believe me I was born on Friday the 13th.

Dear Fuity Tooty: I hope I can share some thoughts with you that will help your questioning mind.
"A mind that is stretched to a new idea never returns to its original dimension" by Oliver Wendell Holmes
There's a reason or cause that makes superstitions work - at times. The answer lies within your Self. What Self, with a capital "S" do I speak of? WHAT WE ARE.
WHAT WE ARE - in Mind - is so powerful we can not even grasp the full extent of it! We should understand the central points to our Being and our life:
Since we are made in our Creator's likeness - we are not just physical bodies with a "brain." We are what He is; spirit. Spirit-Mind. Your soul or spirit functions as always - from the day of your Creation. God is a Power beyond our concepts. In the manner we were established - as His Kingdom - He created like Himself, more of Himself. We are not God. But, we are OF Him. We lay in divine security and ecstacy within the enfoldment of His Self. We are created as a Thought He had first - before He Created us. Everything is Mind.
Although you see a physical, individual being as your Self - and no longer know your Father/Creator - that is due to the Separation that took place in Eternity - in the Spirit Mind of the Children. There is no guilt, no problem for us in the Separation - rather He answered the Separation and gave us Free Will to have a physical experience of life. Being Eternal, we are safe here in the physical. No matter what the appearance of things. If someone "dies," they are simply "out of sight." But there is no actual death. Like the Father - you share His Eternal-ness.
The One Mind is the design of the Father. All His Children are created with a portion of the One Mind channel running through them. You could imagine it to be, maybe, similar to an umbilical cord. All thought and power from the Creator flows through that channel to each and all of us at the same time! Our thoughts are flowing through that channel to each other and to God, also. We experience the feeling and sensing of His ecstacy through that One Mind. It is still operating, while you have the physical experience.
Whatever our minds focus on and think about, with strength, we can cause to occur. You see witchcraft attracts those who desire to use the power - they do not truly understand - for themselves - that they may feel powerful on their own.
Those who await the use of the power - from the Holy Spirit - on behalf of God, get to use and experience that power also, but with the grace and safety of allowing God to guide - only for good-what He would provide to you. You are not, then, seeking to be the Power - yourself. You acknowledge your position in the Kingdom of God.
Superstitions come from people seeing things occur that they can not explain - and have no understanding of the role they are playing in the occurrence. They do not understand the power that flows through them, and what their own thoughts can produce. It is dangerous to be superstitious because it is a state of not understanding your power THROUGH God and what it is capable of. We are truly God's Children.
If someone says to you the thing you have typed as a question - know that it can be true - ONLY if something in their mind desires it strongly enough to produce it. Some of us do punish ourselves to feel free of guilts - we have now paid for! The human mind called ego-mind, can be very punishing.
Sum it all up as: What you think and believe - becomes yours.
